The Way High Denim

  • Everlane's highest denim - with the rise coming in at 12 1/8
  • Straight leg style
  • Comes in 10 different colors including typical denim washes
  • Slight stretch to the denim
  • Size down for a perfect fit

In full disclosure, I normally don't wear denim with a rise this high. Because of my body type – longer legs, shorter torso – a 10 inch rise sits at my natural waist and compliments me the best. So a 12+ denim rise was brand new territory for both wearing and styling. And I was actually very impressed.

I still don't think it's the most flattering on my body, but it allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and style a piece I don't think I would have naturally chosen.

Pros and Cons of the Way High Denim

Con: Another point to make on this pair of denim is they are not necessarily petite friendly. I'm 5'1" and as you can see by photos these jeans are not at all cropped like they are on the website. I don't think it affects the style too much, especially considering straight leg denim is on-trend at the moment, but if you're petite and looking for a cropped straight leg, expect to get these tailored or look elsewhere.

Pro: Due to the fabric composition of these jeans, they were extremely comfortable. I like more rigid denim that still have a bit of stretch and this pair with their 98% cotton 2% elastane really made movement easy without compromising on style or shape.

Pro: They come in 10 different colors. I have my eye on the Rich Earth color which is a beautiful deep burnt orange.

How to Style a Colorful Outfit for Early Spring

If you're surprised to see a more colorful outfit on the blog . . . well, I am too. As you know I normally stick to in the neutral colors - happily I might add - but I wanted to give myself a bit of a challenge and work on styling something with a bit more color but definitely with still a healthy dose of toned-down naturals.

If you're looking at a pair of denim you just can't seem to style or a top you love that's maybe just a bit too colorful, before you find a second home for it, try these tricks to see if you make it work:

  • make your "problem piece" the statement piece of the outfit. If you're determined to make the item work for you, pull out items that fit well and you're comfortable wearing and start trying on options. For example, if it's a pair of jeans that are just a bit out there for you, grab your favorite white tee or button blouse or silk tank and start styling with pieces that are comfortable and familiar.
  • layers are key for early spring styling. I'm not normally one to keep a pair of pants around if I can only wear them in certain outfits or scenarios, but I do love the look of straight or wide leg denim with layers, a chunky sweater, and a knee-length coat. It just gives that French-girl don't care look we all obsess about on Pinterest. Sometimes you just need to keep a trench around for those moments.
  • keep your accessories minimal and your accents neutral. Especially if you're just starting to get comfortable with new trends or pieces, make sure you have an ivory or oatmeal cardigan around for a grounding effect, gold or silver jewelry for classic accents, and a simple shoe - anything from a leather mule or a low sneaker - will do.
  • wear it with confidence. If you don't love your outfit, try again with a different style another time, or just determine that that piece is not for you. A bit of older sister advice: you don't have to love or embrace every trend that walk down the runway or shows up on Euphoria.
