How to Style a Monochromatic Look

Add some layers for warmth and visual interest and try incorporating a statement neutral into your shoes and an accessory or two for a polished and chic look.

It’s no secret that cooler months bring an onset of deeper hues, darker colors, and less variety to wardrobe just recently filled with pastels and neons. Styling neutrals is one of the easiest things to do, yet so often the black and white all over combo isn’t very inspiring.

This fall, the monochromatic look is all over the fashion world, but pulling it off is a little less more challenging. I picked up a couple pieces recently that combined my favorite neutral – gray – into a perfectly monochromatic outfit. The key is to find coordinating shades of the same color in order to pull the look completely.

Pick your favorite color – white, gray, burgundy, mauve, oatmeal, etc. – and then find complimentary shades of that color (some may be lighter, some may be darker) in order to create the look. I love mixing textures and patterns as well into the look to break up the color and add some visual interest. This is especially easy to do in the fall with suedes, velvets, and corduroy taking center stage.
