Have you ever finished a book, like a really good book, and wondered what you should read next? That used to be me until I created a Goodreads account, started following BookTok (the book side of TikTok) and became obsessed with our local used bookstore.

Now, I feel like there's never enough time to read and way too many stories I'm dying to figure out. But August was a good reading month and I have six solid book recommendations if you're wondering what to read next.

I've linked these books for purchase on Amazon because that's where I get a bit of affiliate income through, but if you're able to I suggest you buy books from local, used bookstores or small booksellers. Seriously, this is an industry that Amazon does not need to monopolize.

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

Book type: nonfiction

Review: 5/5 stars

Thoughts: believe it or not I have never read Marie Kondo's book. I know her principles and have watched her Netflix special but have never read about her process.

If you're not familiar with the name, Kondo is a tidying expert based in Japan. She has changed the lives of thousands of people with her radical approach to keeping your home and life tidy.

Seriously, so motivating if you're looking for some inspiration to clear the clutter from your house and life.

See You in the Piazza

Book Type: nonfiction

Review: 5/5 stars

Thoughts: I love Frances Mayes writing. This is the third book I've finished by the Under the Tuscan Sun author and it's just the most charming travel account of Italy.

She documents their travels all across Italy with beautiful descriptions, colorful anecdotes and lessons leaned along the way. Her writing puts you in the center of small Italian towns so you feel like you've personally experienced the Italy she loves so much.

The Night Circus

Book Type: Fiction / Fantastical but not fantasy

Review: 6/5 stars - seriously

Thoughts: where do I even start with this book?

  • very likely the best book I've read all year
  • I savored this story. I am a very fast reader, but I took a week to read this book to hold on to every word
  • Twists and turns you won't see coming
  • Magic and fantasy and love and heart
  • Exquisite descriptions of a place I ended up believing or wishing was real
  • A story I will read over and over

Throne of Glass Book One - Three

Book Type: Fiction / Fantasy

Review: 5/5 stars

Thoughts: A little slow to start, but I am invested hook line and sinker into this story now.

The best modern fantasy apart from Harry Potter I have ever read. I feel like it is a bit mislabeled. It's always in the Young Adult book lists and while I do feel like young people can read it, it is so well written it does not read like a young adult novel. Currently reading book 4 - there are six books plus a few novellas in the series.
